ARTISTIC CONCEPT
Approximately one million years ago, Homo erectus first consciously harnessed and controlled fire. Since then, the wheels of human progress have been deeply imprinted toward the future, aided by this gift from nature. Therefore, the core concept of my work is to explore how nature and humanity interact to shape art.
Hi. My name is Aiyuan Zeng, and I’m a final year student at the University of Melbourne, majoring in Graphic Design and Performance Design. This site is my portfolio for curious minds and serves as a resume for potential employers. It showcases my projects during my study.
My work is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between humanity and the materials we are given, including raw elements from the earth or refined industrial resources. I see all material as a gift from nature to be shaped with intention, transforming it into narratives about our shared journey.
To make this dialogue interactive, I would like to build a shared board for living digital collage, where visitors can respond to my work with their own thoughts.
Ultimately, I aim to make users feel connected and curious about how we’ve always made art from the world around us, and also, see how I might fit into a company.
Areas of Exploration
The following sections outline the areas in which I have developed my skills. While most of my work is digital, I am particularly drawn to handcrafted practices. Working with physical materials helps me understand how materiality shapes artistic concepts, and I greatly enjoy the process of material exploration and refinement.
What Can Material Do?
Both works are handmade and constructed using a variety of materials, including paint, cardstock, clay, metal, and natural leaves. By layering and juxtaposing these elements, I examined how differences in texture, weight, and rigidity influence the overall form and conceptual direction of the pieces.
Visual Narratives
This section presents my graphic design work through digital exploration. I use layout, typography, colour, and imagery to experiment and refine ideas.
